Denzel Curry & Kenneth Blume – DIFFERENCE
Five years after UNLOCKED, and its 2021 remix companion UNLOCKED 1.5, the pair is back with “ii”, out August 21 on Loma Vista Recordings, and closing single “DIFFERENCE” (featuring Yebba) first thing out of the gate.
Mostly known as Kenny Beats, Blume gives Curry lots of space to work with and builds the song on a funk-soul sample using strong bass and keys. Curry circles the idea that fame changes people faster than they would want to admit, calling out those who talk a big game about loyalty and community while acting entirely for themselves. Yebba’s hook falls in low, worn-down, a tired counterweight to Curry’s sharper, more accusing songs. NOTACHance oversaw the video, which split the screen between Curry’s daily life and Blume’s.
The nine-track album also features JPEGMAFIA and Westside Gunn, and follows a year in which Curry launched supergroup The Scythe (W08), supported Deftones across Europe, and guested with Fred again.. in New York. Blume has spent the same stretch producing IDLES, Geese, Fcukers, Show Me The Body, Rico Nasty and Weezer’s upcoming self-titled record. Physical copies of ii follow on December 4.
